Toledo Web Professionals on AWS
Pizza and PowerPoint were on the menu at our offices last Wednesday night for the June meetup of the Toledo Web Professionals. This month, it was our privilege to both host the event and provide one of our own as the speaker. Steve Bumbaugh, a director of engineering here at Hanson, gave a presentation about Amazon Web Services (AWS), including an overview of AWS and how we use these services for our clients.
What’s AWS? Some people think of it as virtual machine hosting, but it’s far more than that. It’s a globally distributed toolbox of application services and infrastructure offered by Amazon.com. When combined together, these services provide a cloud platform that happens to power quite a number of popular websites.
Steve’s talk covered some of the services we commonly use at Hanson, including:
- Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
- Route 53
- Simple Storage Service (S3)
- CloudFront (CDN)
- Relational Database Service (RDS)
- DynamoDB (NoSQL)
- CloudWatch
- Identity Access Management (IAM)
- Simple Queue Service (SQS)
- Simple Notification Service (SNS)
- Simple Email Service (SES)
He also talked a bit about how we use AWS for our clients, including the service oriented architecture that supports the recently-released HGTV Folio iPad application.
