What’s better than checking in to a location via your smartphone? Learning something cool about the place you’re standing.

This week saw the official launch of a mobile app Hanson developed to support the AIGA Toledo and The Arts Commission public arts project known as “You Are Here Toledo.”

The project is an installation of 100 3-foot-wide dots representing 100 area artists. The dots are installed around the city to highlight unique landmarks and locations of Toledo. The app is a digital scavenger hunt that allows users to collect the dots by scanning the QR code on each one to learn more about the location, artwork and artist.

If you follow Hanson on Facebook or Twitter, you know that we’re pretty involved in our local community. Since Hanson team members have been active in AIGA for a number of years, we were especially excited to support this project by designing and building an app for both iOS and Android.

So congratulations to the AIGA Toledo and The Arts Commission on successfully engaging the community and promoting the arts here in our hometown. And if you’re in the area, download the app and start collecting—because the first 100 users to collect 25 dots will earn a limited edition screen-printed poster!

Updated 2/12/13: The You Are Here Toledo mobile app and website have been named Outstanding Achievement in HOW Magazine’s International Design Award annual issue!
